Ukranian Plast (Scouting) in the UK has a relatively recent history. Although Ukranian Scouts started in Ukraine, following the tenets laid down by Lord Baden Powell, they were quickly seen as a nationalist force by the Russians who occupied Ukraine and were forced underground. In mny ways this strengthened the movement and created a strong bond. This bond continues in many countries around the world particularly in Canada and the US.
Ukranian Plast is being revived through the influx of Ukranians from Ukraine who are visiting these camps in various countries, where the Ukranian population has not continued to pursue the traditions and lifestyles of the early post WWII immigrants.
In the UK, the Ukranian Scouting Organisation was started in 1948, by a Tadymyr Atamaniuk and taken over by Ciopa Palijiw who organised the first camp in Chiddingfold, Surrey on grounds owned by the Association of Ukranians in Great Britain. After building camps, which lasted for 3 weeks a year in Chiddingfold, North Wales, and Garendon Hall (on the grounds of the Lord de Lisle), returning to Chiddingfold . Shortly thereafter, Ukranian PLAST, the organisation, bought a parcel of property in Llysfaen, North Wales, where a camp is held every year. The official web site for Ukranian PLAST in the United Kingdom is here
